From Home Computers to the Web
Computing trivia covers a short history that moved very fast. Within one lifetime the field went from machines that filled a room to phones that outperform them, and the questions here range across that whole span — early home computers, the birth of the web, operating systems, and the companies behind them.
Older questions reward having been there. Newer ones reward paying attention. Most people find they are strong at one end and weak at the other.
Jargon Versus Knowledge
A lot of computing vocabulary is acronyms, and acronyms are easy to use without ever unpacking. Plenty of people type a URL a hundred times a day without recalling what the letters stand for.
These quizzes lean on the ideas rather than the spelling. Knowing what a firewall does matters more here than knowing which company shipped it first.
Common Questions
- Is this for programmers?
- No. The questions assume you use computers, not that you build them. Anyone who has owned a PC or a phone will recognise most of the ground.
- Are the questions kept current?
- The history questions do not change. Where a question touches something recent, it is written around a fact that is already settled rather than a moving target.
